Monthly Kumikō Experience
Kōdō 香道, the Way of Incense,
is one of Japan's most elusive cultural arts, with its roots in classical court culture and elite warrior-class traditions. Please join us for these monthly sessions offering an introduction to the elegant art of incense appreciation. Classes are held once per month English class: one Saturday per month* 11:30 am Japanese class: one Friday per month* 10:30 am & 2:00 pm *monthly dates change depending on instructor availability* This class is for individuals who have already taken our "Introduction to Kumikō" class or the equivalent. If it is your first time participating in kōdō, please contact us before registering for the monthly class. Location: SaBi Tea Arts Fee: $35+GST 90 minutes Next sessions: English class: Saturday, April 6 at 11:30 am Japanese class: Friday, April 5 at 10:30 am & 2:00 pm Participants will participate in Kumikō incense appreciation games. Through sampling different types of aromatic woods, we also explore Japanese history, poetic traditions, and aesthetics. Tea and sweets will be served following each session. |
日本の古典芸道のひとつである香道

Introduction to Kumikō
はじめての方のための組香体験教室
90 minutes
This single-session class is for individuals who wish to experience kōdō (Japanese incense ceremony) for the first time.
You will first learn basic techniques for handling the incense burner and "listening" to incense,
then participate in an exercise (kumikō) to try to distinguish among three different types of incense.
This class introduces participants to kōdō incense ceremony through the
kumikō exercise called "Setsu Getsu Ka" 雪月花 or "Snow, Moon, and Flower."
Those who have previously participated in an Introduction to Kumikō session,
please consider our Monthly Kumikō Experience below.
Maximum participants per class: 8
Cost: $35+GST
